Guilford Historical Society

Welcome to Guilford, a small central Maine mill town with an industrial heritage reaching back two hundred years; young, as far as towns go in New England, yet witness to significant change in methodology, technology, and economy throughout the years. In these pages and through the following exhibits, we hope to share our stories, spark your interest, invite your questions about our village, and open to view the forgotten and overlooked jewels of our historic past.

Enjoy your brief visit with us through this living document as we journey back to a former age to explore the times and trials that forged our collective character. Learn about our people, from the early settlers, farmers, and land holders, through merchants and businessmen, to the soldiers and heroes who lived and died here, and of the sacrifices of sweat, tears and even lives expended in the shaping and preservation of this place we call home.

LOW'S BRIDGE
HISTORIC LANDMARK

Piscataquis River & Low's Bridge, Guilford, ca. 1950

Piscataquis River & Low's Bridge, Guilford, ca. 1950

Low's Bridge is an historic covered bridge located in Guilford, Maine. The bridge was originally built in 1830, rebuilt in 1843, 1857 and 1990. The bridge was destroyed twice by spring flooding.

Low's Bridge was named in honor of one of the area's first settlers, Robert Low. Once a major link between Guilford and Sangerville, today the bridge which has been referred to as a "... bridge to our past", serves as part of the area's snowmobile trails in the winter, ATV trails in summer and as year-round ambassador for our area.

As one of only nine covered bridges left in Maine, Low's Bridge is listed on The National Register of Historic Places, has had several local businesses named after it and has been inspiring passion in artists, daydreamers and visitors of every sort for over 150 years.
